I have built some prototypes in the past that did audio and video "private
messaging", which is simulated email via a web site.... but email alerts of
new messages, along with the content and link to audio, video (and attached
files) were included.
I think thats the closest thing to video email you can get..... until gmail
and yahoo mail integrate it in a more controlled manner..... for example the
audio/video can be played within the webmail UI (if flv, swf, mp3) but the
embeds are not truly in the body of the message.  I think that is what we
will see soon.... webmail UI's with integrated media handling.    At some
point, I can also see offline mode for gmail and other webmail services
(coming soon) letting you configure download management of attachments and
linked files found in message body.
