Sorry to be late on this. If your collection is fairly static, this will probably work. We put the discs in pockets from Demco; double rolls of accession numbers are ordered - one accession number is placed on the case cover, the other on the pocket. We also write the title and the barcode on the pocket. These are in file drawers by accession number. The empty cases are on the shelves by title for feature films, and by call number for nonfiction. People bring up the empty cases and the circ clerks retrieve the discs. Due to the volume we circulate - we limit DVDs to 5 per person. We also have the same setup for CDs - except the limit is 10 per person. However, if you have a large, growing collection, this can start causing problems. Do you have space to expand cabinets when the collection is growing. It doesn't take as long as you think. Hope this helps.

All I know is my department is on the chopping block and I have to help move the collection to the circulation department. The head of circ is brainstorming and on of the things she brought up is making the collection browsable. We lack the funding to make the collection secure, so the thought is to go the empty case on the shelf and DVD kept behind a counter. So I am asking those libraries that have this kind of model, how are you storing your DVDs? Do you have them in sleeves, and if so how are they stored? Any help you can provide would be nice. thanks jhs John H. Streepy Media Services Supervisor Library-Media Circulation James E. VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
