Thanks, Liz. I suspect this one won't suit this particular prof's particular needs, but it certainly is an interesting and important topic. I'll definitely preview this if it's available at NMM. Appreciate your response!

Hello, Susan, Bullfrog Films offers a new documentary that may be helpful as a complement to Ethnic Notions. MULTIRACIAL IDENTITY (2011, 77 and 56 minutes on one DVD, Purchase $295, Rental $85) Multiracial people are the fastest growing demographic in America, yet there is no official political recognition for mixed-race people. MULTIRACIAL IDENTITY explores the social, political, and religious impact of the multiracial movement and the lived experience of being multiracial. Different racial and cultural groups see multiracialism differently. For some Whites multiracialism represents the pollution of the White race. For some Blacks it represents an attempt to escape Blackness. And for some Asians, Latinos, and Arabs, multiracialism can be seen as ill equipped to perpetuate cultural traditions and therefore represents the dilution of the culture. The history and contemporary experience of racially mixed people is thoroughly documented. Students, policy makers, professors and researchers will all benefit greatly from the difficult questions this film raises about the politics of racial categories and the on-going battle for Civil Rights. Multiracial Identity is ultimately about self and community representation, human rights, social justice, and respect. It will be vital in my current and future course curriculum." Like many of you, our copy of Ethnic Notions has gotten a lot of use over the years. In fact, I've just upgraded to DVD from VHS since it's still getting used frequently. But here's a question from a prof who uses it often: since Ethnic Notions is a 1987 production, while it's great at both providing examples of stereotyping of African-Americans and a historical overview of those stereotypes, it does... well... stop in 1987. Have others of you found something comparable that is more current? We have MEF's Dreamworlds 3, MEF's Stuart Hall and Tim Wise offerings, California Newsreel's Black Is... Black Ain't, and scores of other titles which deal with race, but they often seem to focus on one particular aspect of culture (music, sport, etc.) or lack the historic overview by focusing on one time period. We'd love to know if there's something quite similar to Ethnic Notions in speaking *both* to stereotypes/caricatures of African Americans *and* to the historical context. Lawrence, anything in the works from Newsreel itself by way of an update or supplement to Ethnic Notions?
