For anyone who might be interested, I'll be giving two presentations at ALA on OLAC's work with FRBR and moving images. I posted here some time ago about OLAC's prototype interface at http://blazing-sunset-24.heroku.com/. Our project hopes to improve access to film and video in libraries by creating a discovery interfaces that focuses on the original movie or program and by providing more structured data to populate facets that will be useful for searching and browsing.
On Friday, June 22, I'll be giving an overview of our proposed project to use FRBR and facets to improve access to moving images. This will be during OLAC's Cataloging Policy Committee meeting at the Hilton Anaheim, San Simeon room and will start at approximately 8:45 pm and last for about 25 minutes (I know--not your favorite time for a meeting, but at least it won't conflict with any other official meetings) http://ala12.scheduler.ala.org/node/1215 Probably of lesser interest to this group, but on Sunday, June 24 at 10:30 am, I'll be talking about the aspect of the project that we're currently working on. We're using the XC Metadata Services Toolkit to experiment with automated extraction of data elements describing moving image works from existing MARC bibs. This will be at the Cataloging & Classification Research Interest Group's session (full description below) in the Hyatt Regency Orange County - Grand Ballroom E. http://ala12.scheduler.ala.org/node/409 Hope to see some of you there! Kelley ********************************************* ALCTS CaMMS Cataloging & Classification Research Interest Group ALA Annual Meeting, Anaheim, CA Date: Sunday, June 24, 2012 Time: 10:30 am - Noon Location: Hyatt Regency Orange County - Grand Ballroom E Topic: Traditions and Transitions in Library Catalogs Join CCRIG for a peek into the future of library catalogs, as cataloging practices transition from AACR2 to RDA, and into the FRBR and linked data environment. Find out how libraries are applying theoretical constructs now, and what kinds of research we need to move forward with improving library catalogs. Speakers will be available for brief question and answer sessions following their presentations. "Everyday Cataloger Concerns: A Research-Based Agenda for Library Cataloging," presented by Allyson Carlyle, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Paul J. Weiss, Violet Fox, and Morgan Bell, University of Washington Information School. This research project focuses on bridging the gap between conceptual, academic cataloging research and the needs of catalogers. The presentation will review the results of interviews and focus groups to identify the most important areas of research for practicing catalogers, research directions for improving library catalogs, and will provide a comparison of practicing cataloger views and the views recently expounded by the Library of Congress about cataloging research. "Fishing for FRBR in MARC, Mining for Data in Free Text," presented by Kelley McGrath, Metadata Management Librarian, University of Oregon. A report on part of a larger project, which uses the XC Metadata Services Toolkit to extract MARC data to create provisional records for FRBR group 1 entities populated with structured data optimized for machine manipulation. The discussion will include the methodology used for identifying data elements, especially those that potentially occur in multiple MARC fields or may be hidden in free text fields like notes, as well as examples of the problems encountered, and an initial assessment of the accuracy of the process. "RDA in RDF: Transitioning to the FRBR Catalog and the Semantic Web," presented by Kimmy Szeto, Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, Maritime College, State University of New York. In preparation for the transition from AACR2 to RDA, the presentation will report on the potential of the application of RDA in the current catalog environment. It will include a theoretical overview of RDA, RDF and Linked Data; a demonstration of converting and encoding actual bibliographic records to RDA, RDF and XML; and a review of implementation challenges in existing library systems and how they can best prepare for the Linked Data future ************************** Kelley McGrath Metadata Management Librarian University of Oregon Libraries 1299 University of Oregon Eugene, OR 97403 541-346-8232 [email protected] VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
