A WAR IN HOLLYWOOD (HOLLYWOOD CONTRA FRANCO)
A film by Oriol Porta
Spain / 91 min / Documentary / Spanish and English with English subtitles

A War in Hollywood explores Hollywood’s relationship to the Spanish Civil War
opening up questions about the dynamic interrelation between film and politics.
Focusing on the life of screenwriter Alvah Bessie, who fought in Spain with the
Abraham Lincoln Brigades in 1937 and was ultimately blacklisted by the House
Un-American Activities Committee, the film illustrates the impact and influence
the war had on Hollywood film production during the years of strife and the
evolution of Franco's image on film. The film also includes interviews with
cinema history experts Roman Gubern and Patrick McGilligan, actress Susan
Sarandon, and Hollywood writers Arthur Laurents and Walter Bernstein.
