It would be nice to have them, but the classroom equipment is not under the library's purview -- it's up to the campus IT department. I ask every year or two, so it's time for me to do that again.

Is there a logistical reason you can't  have more multi-system players?  They are not expensive and while the Jennings films were government produced so there might be a sliver of chance the BBC could allow to transfer to NTSC this would not be the case with privately owned material which is 99% of what is out there.

Thanks, Blaine, I did find a copy of that, and asked BFI for assistance on the other titles, though I'm not holding my breath for good news. The professor also wants Basil Wright's Song of Ceylon, and I find only BFI or poor Youtube copies.

Deborah,

There was this from 2002:

Listen to Britain and other films

Humphrey Jennings; David Shepard; Dean W Duncan; Myra Hess, Dame

2002, 1940

English Visual MaterialVisual Material : Videorecording : DVD videoDVD video 1 videodisc (182 mins.) : sd., b&w ; 4 3/4 in. + program notes ([8] p. : ill. ; 19 cm)

Chatsworth, CA : Image Entertainment,

A collection of six films (and one bonus film) by one of the greatest figures in the celebrated British Documentary Film Movement. He is most remembered for the way his work reflects the concerns and conditions of World War II era in the United Kingdom. In these pictures, Jennings's impressive aesthetic arsenal helped to expand the scope and vocabulary of documentary films.

Contents:

London can take it (1940, 9 mins.) -- Words for battle (1941, 8 mins.) -- Listen to Britain (1942, 18 mins.) -- Fires were started (1943, 70 mins.) -- A diary for Timothy (1943, 39 mins.) -- Family portrait (1951, 26 mins.) -- Myra Hess, playing the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata in F Minor No. 57 (Apassionata) (1945, 9 mins.).

I’m afraid it looks out of print now

hi VLers

Does anyone know of U.S. distribution of any Humphrey Jennings films? A faculty member wants to show her class Spare Time and others unspecified. I can find only PAL/ Region 2 discs from BFI, which we don't routinely buy, since our university classroom setups won't play them. Alternatively, do you know if BFI will let us rip discs to NTSC -- or who I could ask?

Thanks for your insights,
