This position is responsible for the curation and oversight of all the Library's media (moving image and audio) collections and specializes in the collection development and management of moving image resources. The position is based 60% in the Digital Library Development Program (DLDP) and 40% in the Collection Development & Management Program (CDM). The UC San Diego Library plays a critical role in advancing and supporting the University's research, teaching, patient care, and public service missions. The Library acquires and manages significant media resources in support of all disciplines, particularly the arts and humanities and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The diverse the media collections include a strong emphasis on 20th and 21st century, avant-garde, and cross-disciplinary arts. The collections, including sound (LP, CD, tape), moving image materials (VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, 16mm film) as well as licensed digital media content, have been developed as essential resources supporting instruction and research. Collections of distinction include experimental art films, Asian videos, 20th and 21st century poetry, art and music recordings and scores, post-1950 visual arts, media documenting SIO and Melanesian research expedition, and new media. Responsibilities of the Position The position will report to the DLDP Program Director and will also work in the CDM Program directly with the Art & Humanities Collection Coordinator and the Preservation Unit Manager. * As the Library's Media Curator: * Serve as the Library's thought leader on the full life cycle management of all its media collections. Work with other UC campuses in collaborative media preservation or reformatting efforts. * Supervise the Reformatting Operations Unit in the DLDP, which includes the Books & Microfilm Workstation Manager, the Moving Image Producer, and the Audio Engineer. * Coordinate the work of the Geisel Library Collections Assistant for Media Formats (LAIII 50%) and the student assistants who work on moving image collections in CDM. * Monitor environmental conditions for media collections and report problems with temperature and humidity levels. * As the Library's moving image materials format expert: * Select and acquire moving image resources, including directing and advising Subject Librarians on developing these resources in their respective disciplines. Review and advise on the disposition of moving image gift offers. * Assist Subject Librarians and Learning Services with public service and instructional requests for moving images resources and recordings. Monitor and assess users' moving image format preferences. Serve as a Library resource to advise faculty on the use and reuse of complete/snippets of copyrighted media materials for instructional and research purposes. Promote important new moving image content or resources to the campus community, including maintaining an appropriate LibGuide. Advise Communications & Engagement (C&E) program staff on suitable film titles to be included in Library-hosted Film Series. * Provide library-wide expertise about the development, availability, options and opportunities for the provision of streaming film resources. Research and identify appropriate resources for licensing or purchase. * Advise and collaborate with Special Collections and Archives (SC&A) staff to address the management and conservation of moving image and audio materials within the SC&A collection. * Manage and maintain the moving image collection which includes a variety of acetate film formats, VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. * Ensure proper bibliographic access is provided for moving image materials. Maintain legal paperwork pertaining to deeds of gift within the moving image collection. * Create, revise, and implement policies and best practices related to the management of moving image materials. Working with the AOP (Access Operations) and CARS (Content Acquisition and Resource Sharing) Program Directors, create, revise, and revise policies related to the circulation, in house use, and interlibrary loan of these materials. Minimum Qualifications * Professional degree from a library school, or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services. * Academic work in Film Studies. * Experience in managing and developing moving image collections in various formats. * Supervisory experience. * Demonstrated ability to work with end users in meeting their academic needs for film content. * Demonstrated knowledge of the technology and equipment involved in the support of access, repair, preservation, and digital reformatting and transfer of a variety of film formats. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to plan, document, and complete projects. * Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills. * Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment and with faculty, students, staff and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. * Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Preferred Qualifications * Experience developing and managing media collections within a library consortium. * Experience in evaluating and selecting commercial digital moving image or audio resources.
