Hello Toby!
I have myself been through a fairly painful packaging marathon
(cross-compiling matlab MEX files from linux to windows), so I understand
how annoying it can be. Since Ubuntu <= 13.04 use by default python 2,
solution (2) seems perfectly reasonable to me.
I fear that I can't really help on that architectural problem, I'm not the
most knowledgeable person when it comes to build systems :)
Good luck!
Philippe
