I just took a look at the tail-end and it looks like the strings terminate
at that rectangular bridge an inch or so from the absolute rear edge. That
might be the only bridging device present. The distortion might be due to
being painted on a curved surface/ceiling dome (and intentional)? I think
there's some information missing rather than the strings being gathered
close together at the visible bridge -- can't say for sure. The two visible
frets say the string length should be long (no second bridge under his
hand). If you double-size the image you can make out body-depth around more
of the sides, front in particular, neck-joint too. And it sure does look
like 5 fat twisted rope single strings to me. I believe the better looking
sections are original and untouched surface.
