The last time this came up (Dec 2007) we were trying to move to 2.10 in order to enable better printing support, but If I recall correctly, debian wasn't using 2.10 yet, even though it had been out for a while.
Right now CentOS 5 is using gtk2-2.10.4-20.el5.src.rpm <http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/centos/5.3/os/SRPMS/gtk2-2.10.4-20.el5.src.rpm> . Not sure what debian is at. Suse 11 (probably approaching EOL) is at 2.12.9, and Ubuntu is at 2.16.1 Even if we don't move to 2.12, let's at least move to 2.10. Tim P.S.
