Two caveats - one, I'm not very famliar with relatime stuff yet, and two, I only walked up and down the garden. Finally figured gpsd out, so I could connect with telnet and see some data. Viking seemed to connect to gpsd ok, starting realtime tracking produced a REALTIME log, but it never actually logged any data - it remained at zero points for about 10 minutes.
