Hi, In the idea of modularization, we need to keep a code with a limited number of #ifdef related to features. I did a first work in this direction, removing some HAVE_LIBMAPNIK. the resulting code has a better encapsulation: background module is cleaner.
I expose this work on branch https://github.com/guyou/viking/tree/revise-background I did some minimal tests and it seems to be correct enougth (cf. https://travis-ci.org/guyou/viking). Nevertheless, I do not have a "mapnik" environment to do some non-regression tests.
