"nothing" changed, you say; but are you sure the "development" packages 
required for _compiling_ (not just _running_) your GUI (possibly several 
of them: gtk2-dev, x11-dev, maybe some more) are still there? Configure 
didn't find any of them. You may need to run whatever commands are 
required under Debian to check for the presence of those "development" 
packages, install them if they aren't there, and bring them 
up-to-the-latest-date.
