I (partially) agree. I usually swap Caps lock and control, so that on
the off chance that I might need caps lock the aforementioned finger
curl makes it available.

Perhaps I should just disable it completely. As Tony mentioned, Vim
might not have control over it. (The terminal emulators seem to provide
a method for controlling numlock, but not caps lock).
