It's a patch problem. vim_extended itself is just a vanilla copy of Vim. The only difference is that it makes it easy to merge patches on top of vanilla. So if I were to pull vim_extended and /.configure; make; make install, I would have exactly the same binary as if I did it in Vim proper.
