Yes, because conceal information is not accessible via script at this time.

I would definitely like to add this feature, but it will require a
patch to the C code.

I have looked at the code some but I have never touched it before. I
think that adding a function to return the character to display will
be pretty easy. For now, that's all that is needed, because any
concealed regions that are adjacent to each other get collapsed into
the first region. I think it would be cool in the future to allow
adjacent regions to be distinct, to allow things like showing greek
letters in place of the codes in Tex documents, or the actual
character for html entities in html pages. If this ever happens, there
will need to be additional information about the start and end of a
concealed region made accessible.
