On a Solaris box, it's relatively unlikely that `vi' runs "vim". You can check by doing :version - that will either fail entirely (meaning you're not running vim) or show a bunch of information including "-syntax" (meaning you are using a vim binary, but that syntax highlighting support wasn't compiled in).
