It's really slow with vim, tex, and markdown syntax, somewhat slow
with sh and mail, and fast (but still slower than regexpengine == 0)
with c and perl. The speed is indeed the same with syntax off, at least
as far as I can tell.
That said, these are only my perception, I have no idea how to get
precise measurements for this.
