Ok, I didn't realize that they would actually stop the read-only
service. In that case, yes, it is pointless to preserve the tag format
for my use case.

Sure, but I thought that Google gave half a shit, that's all. Offering
a VCS service--which implies a commitment to content
addressability--also implies that you might want to support the
Uniform Resource Locator concept, even if you sunset the service, if
the cost of doing so is minimal.
