You're on a 64-bit system, I suppose?
It may be due to too little live RAM (and the need for a lot of disk
swapping) but in general Vim does get sluggish when editing large
files. Disabling undo and/or swap may alleviate the problem if you're
willing to sacrifice those safeties.
Bram (or someone) might perhaps be able to help better than me if you
can get a stack trace at the time of the crash. Preferably with
symbols, which might mean compiling the executable yourself and
avoiding whatever corresponds on Windows to the "strip" step which, on
my Linux system, is part of "make install".
