As a random data point, I installed three new systems with Debian in
the last weeks; the first time I installed new systems for years. As
those systems were not intended for personal use, I didn't copy my
personal configs which have carried anti-mouse boilerplate for roughly
a decade.

I was bitten by mouse being enabled on every one of those systems;
especially when setting up, it's quite common to copy & paste text,
data, and config over. For configs, I usually use Vim. Not being able
to paste by pressing middle button and having my cursor jump all over
the place was surprising at best.

On the other hand, I do get that new users might have an expectation
of the mouse working. But I would argue that those could use gVim if
they wanted a more mouse-centric UI.
