I have no answer here except that this just happens a lot to me. Maybe I pause editing a command and switch to another application, come back to Vim and try to click on a window to focus and scroll up to see something. I click three or four times and realize I have to press <ESC> or Ctrl-C. I guess it just made sense to me that I should be able to click out of the command line.
