Outch, then I've seen this error some time before. It seemingly depends
on diverse things from the specific X11 Server to the terminal/program
involved.  Does the test 'speak' only with the X11-Server itself, or
with something else?  I never found a way to check without simply trying.

I see the same 'minimal' == 'only /etc/passwd' set of users.
(as in the other answer: 'getent passwd | grep ...' does
find only those too.)
