Thanks for the detailed replies to my questions.

>From all those tests it is clear that something is going wrong inside
the Vim binary and that its not MacVim itself that is acting up but I
can't say what exactly is wrong.  Have you tried simply deleting
MacVim.app (and emptying Trash) and then downloading a new snapshot?
