Sorry, I meant keyboard layout -- the one you specify in the System
Preferences.  Specifically, if you're running a custom layout (one
that does not come with Mac OS X) then that is likely the problem.
However, if you tell me which one you're using I can try it myself.

Does the "Keyboard Viewer" app show the characters that you expect or
not?  (It can be accessed from the keyboard layout menu on the menu
bar [which you need to enable in the System Preferences first].)
