As others noticed, to Vim Backspace and Ctrl-H are synonymous. So when
you hit the backspace key, your mapping tries to execute the
":promptrepl" ex-command. The latter, however, is not available on every
version of Vim:
- not on any Console-only version
- on Unix, only on GTK, GTK2 or Motif.

The first five lines or so of the output of the ":version" command
should, among others, tell you whether the version you're using has (1)
no GUI, (2) a Win32, Motif, GTK1 or GTK2 GUI, or (3) some other GUI.
Only in case (2) is the command supported.

Best regards,
Tony.
