'statusline' is unset, so I don't think that's it. Another interesting
piece of information is that the welcome display disappears as well
when I run vim without any arguments. If you don't know what I mean by
the welcome display, here is what it should say:

              VIM - Vi IMproved

                 version 7.2
           by Bram Moolenaar et al.
 Vim is open source and freely distributable

        Help poor children in Uganda!
type  :help iccf<Enter>       for information

type  :q<Enter>               to exit
type  :help<Enter>  or  <F1>  for on-line help
type  :help version7<Enter>   for version info

        Running in Vi compatible mode
type  :set nocp<Enter>        for Vim defaults
type  :help cp-default<Enter> for info on this

Just to reiterate an important point, I'm not running cygwin's vim
(which apparently doesn't have this problem), I'm running the vim that
came with the "Self-installing executable" from <http://www.vim.org/
download.php>. I think it may be a bug in that particular version of
vim, but I'm not sure.
