The USB stick solution is what I have done.  I create a few shortcuts
to gvim.exe by altering the drive letter the shortcut refers to so
that one of them will work, regardless of which of a handful of drive
letters the USB stick is assigned.

Vim itself doesn't use the registry, and if you avoid adding icons to
the menus/Desktop, avoid OLE registration and opt out of the "Edit
with Vim" context menu, then it would leave only a very small trace on
the system.
