It wasn't useless, since it taught you to check your Gmail "spam" folder. It would be a sad thing to unsubscribe from this group now that you've found how to use it: many groups are just so-so, but if I had to keep only one group, this would be the one. About Gmail's spam filters: I think they can be trained. Get the habit of regularly checking your Trash folder (for undetected spam) and your Spam folder (for legit mail classified as spam), hit the right buttons to tell Gmail what, for you, is or isn't spam, and I think that over time it will learn. (In statistic circles, this is called "Bayesian training").
