For one thing, ":g/re/" is not a range. The ":g/re/" command is applying the ":retab! new_tabstop" command to _each_ line that matches the re. As this behavior sinks in, it makes sense, in some sense. I'm thinking more and more that this is not a bug but a misunderstanding and incorrect expectation on my part. I don't know what the correct solution to Hoss's retabbing problem is, since I don't know the problem he's trying to solve.
