AFAIK, there are no good documents on writing color schemes. The one which "sucks less" is $VIMRUNTIME/colors/README.txt But there are many good examples. go vim.sf.net and find scripts, search for top-rated color schemes. download them and view them. you can design your own color scheme based on one of them. Note: you should really remember that :hi clear does not mean clear everything, it means reset everything to the default color scheme.
