Hi Yue: The characters that I typed using the pinyin keymap were equally spaced with each other, but were not spaced as the regular text. I guess that's the ambidwith=double option. At any rate, it turns out that if I try set encoding=utf-8 set ambiwidth=single it works perfectly, and the character spacing with pinyin text is the same as with regular text. So I suspect, that perhaps the utf-8 option alone was sufficient. Thanks for your help and suggestions. It works great now.
