My first thought is that you're running a stripped-down version
of vi(m). Usually called "vim-minimal" or "vim-tiny", I believe
it's the default on RH, and correspondingly on CentOS. You may
have to install a "vim-full" package to get windowing
functionality. You can verify by checking the output of
:ver
to see if it includes "+windows".
PS: I don't know if this is relevant (and it's not important
to me) but the help command doesn't work either. I get the
errors "E433: No tags file" and "E149: Sorry no help for
help.txt".
This may be an artifact of a minimal vim install.
