For the sake of correctness, zip archives work "everywhere" very much the same as tgz files do. linux etc. users could easily install the "tools [...] to use it" (a.k.a unzip) -- if it isn't already installed with the standard installation. AFAIK patents are only an issue if the archive is encrypted. IMHO this discussion will be decided and ended by people using their feet (or whatever is the equivalent English phrase).
