Try this:
:e A
:e B
:b #

the last line will switch back to A doing the same <c-^> would

Thus you have to quote both % and # if you want to pass them to
applications. Yes - another special rule to remember.

How to find this yourself the next time?

:helpgrep alternate
:cope
Then the third hit is "alternate filename" in :h cmdline.txt
line 925 is then what you're looking for.
