Quite a different workaround would be to use your shell.
In bash I set PS1 to something that evaluates, f. ex. as
\[\033[1;33m\]\! $PWD !\[\033[0m\] 
to get a bold yellow prompt (the background is black).  There's also the 
PROMPT_COMMAND shell variable, which I use to set the window title:
echo -en "\e]0;$PWD\007"

You could use either to set the cursor colour, or your shell's equivalents.
