Glad you found the difficulty.
Decho provides several ways to get debugging messages; use DechoRemOn
to avoid buffer number issues. This approach sends debugging output to
a "remote" vim (which Decho.vim sets up), and so leaves the current
vim's buffers, messages, etc pristine.
