While I wouldn't go so far as to claim that you *must* learn to touch-type before you learn to use vim, I find the orthogonality mirrors that of vim. The more touch-typing you learn (or the more vim motions you learn), the more proficient your editing. The more vim you learn (or the more vim actions/commands you learn), the more proficient your editing.
