If checking for trailing backslash is difficult, here is a simpler idea:

go to new line
preserve the indentation and alignment of the previous line
if (there is a second word in the previous line)
        add spaces to align to the second word in the previous line
fi
# word: anything that is not white space

Map all that to Ctrl+Enter (or Shift+Enter).

Is that possible?
