There is drive setup on the cd, after boot you try and use that ?

Do you hear the drive spin up ? There might be a setting on the drive.
Sometimes
I think it needs to spin up sooner or later than the ROM part of the
boot, warming up
the computer or something because the drive takes extra power in its
starting up...

I have not played with all those jumper settings in some time but I
think there is one
called delay auto start maybe.

If it is third party drive you may be able to get the patched hd setup
to work but personally I have found drive formatted with that to be
unstable. So better to get a third party such as FWB or APS Powertools
or SilverLining.

If it has an apple on the label then it should not require 3rd party
driver.

You can also use a later version of drive setup with it. You can use
the one from 8.6 (it might support a few more drives).
