In the original query there may be some need for clarification. Mac used the SCSI connection way back then (circa 1984) because it was the fastest available for the faster Mac variable speed floppy drive. Hard drives were just evolving and the future need for a higher speed connection was recognized. The uniqueness and Voodoo characteristics of SCSI doomed this early ground-breaker. Actually, the serial / printer port connection will work for the SCSI floppy drive. For clarity on Apple IIe & GS that have a special port just for external floppy drives, see http://www.vintagemacworld.com/drives.html The "limitation with Mac machines" was the result of setting the standards for the "PC background". This may have never been true of PC disk drives because they waited to see what what the ground-breakers would do. Don
