The entire system should be turned off when attaching a SCSI device. I think the Mac was always SCSI #0. I've forgotten where to look...maybe in "about this Mac", or Disk First Aid (that probably isn't right -- I don't remember what the disk utility was called.) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
