I've never had a problem with overheating, even with the display sitting on top of the box. In addition to the DOS board, there is a LC PDS card that provides a gameport I/O port and has internal thin ribbon cables running from the LC PDS card to the DOS board which allows the DOS board access to the Mac video feed. If you don't have the special PDS card ,then the DOS board won't work. I ended up buying a LC640 DOS for $30 (total, including shipping) off of ebay to scavenge the PDS card and ribbon cables.
