Apple standards:
SCSI   item
0          internal hard disk
1          first external hard disk
3          first CD reader or writer
7          The computer, Well, the SCSI control device.

Zip drives. (The choice was one of two with a single switch.)
5          First unit
6          Second unit

Despite the fact that the internal drive is # 0 the hardware boot operation, if 
it doesn't find a number in the PRAM will start scanning for a system disk with 
SCSI 6 and work its way downward.

SCSIprobe is a worthwhile piece of software to have available.
