I have a little experience with two old IIfxes. The board has around 15 positions for capacitors C1, C2, etc. Most of them have a position for a box-shaped tantalum AND a can-shaped aluminum. In all but two cases at the top right of the board, they are tantalums which won't fail for another few decades. Those two will almost certainly have leaked by now. They did in my case.
As to the batteries, I have performed some testing on IIs and IIxes. I found a four battery holder and a short length of thin speaker wire and four mini-alligator clips. I placed 3 NiMH rechargables (1.2v nominal 1.3v fully charged) in the holder and clipped the wire to the relevant terminals on the battery and then tried clipping them to the IIfx. I figured one of the batteries was a standard for PRAM and the other for jump starting. Testing both got nothing. However, when I accidentally cross wired them to one battery's negative and the other battery's positive: Success! It would also be possible to use two new alkalines. (1.5v nominal, 1.7v brand new). Technical docs say the 3.6v nominal Lithium Thionyl Chloride backup battery is 3.9v new, and to be replaced if it falls below 3.0v.
