IIRC I cannot format a disk hfs standard in Leopard (the option does
not exist in Disk Utility)
Correct. Supporting ancient file systems is not something you'd want
in a GUI. But you can still do it from Terminal; see 'man diskutil'.
I recall these problems because I wanted to make a place to transfer
files while booted into Linux over back to a place where mac could get
them
