The big problem with Microsoft Office, on Mac and Windows, used to be macro
viruses.

The MS Office macro language is quite powerful and it's possible to write
macros that can do all sorts of nasty things, mostly to Office files, and
propagate themselves to other Office files.

The first line of defense against these is to replace normal.dot with a clean
copy then lock it (Mac) or set the read only attribute (PC).
