Power MAc running OS8
I want the Mac Se to talk to the PowerMac using local talk. I have a
8 Din printer cable connecting the two together via their printer
ports. I have the POWER MAc OS8 connected to the internet via the
eathernet port. I want to run IPNETrouter on the OS8 machine and get
the MAC SE online.
Can I network the two machines together just using the DIN 8 printer cable ?
yes.
I can share files between the two machines using appleshare.
Does this mean that local talk is working?
yes.
LocalTalk is AppleTalk over serial cable. And since the machines can
see each other, it shows that the AppleTalk stack is working fine.
Is it possible to do this using the above mentioned equipment and IPNETROUTER.
Certainly.
Fundamentally, you need to set up two networking stacks: AppleTalk
and TCP/IP, and route between them. Since you have no module to push
IP thru that serial cable directly, you need to tunnel the IP packets
through your AppleTalk network to get them to the SE.
Since you already have AppleTalk running, you're half way there. You
just need to add the IP network and route between them. On the Power
Mac, set up IPNetRouter to use MacIP to tunnel the packets. On the
SE, install MacTCP and tell it to receive packets via MacIP.

There's a lot of good stuff in that guide. Check it out. Also take
a look at Sustwork's Nettalk mailing list archives. There's probably
quite a few old threads discussing all this.
