I believe Apple bought shareway, or at least part of it, for delivery with OS 8.

It was originally developed for use over a wide area network where it made it 
possible to use "standard" interface techniques in the world beyond Apple.

It was also expensive requiring copies for each machine and that's why I never 
used it.  That may have been fixed.
