I had good results from opening the ribbon casing then dripping some black stamp pad ink across the ribbon wadded up inside.
Then I had to user a flat screwdriver in the drive spindle and swing the ribbon around like a noisemaker until the ribbon was run around enough times to distribute the ink evenly. Of course I put the lid back on the casing first! ;) Many ribbons have casings with small pins that just press together. The ones with snap catches or notched pins are a pain to open. Worst are the notched pins that jam into blind holes and the glued or melted closed ones. Opening it up is also the easiest way to apply WD40.
